Today, Sarita is in her 12th grade and is on the path of fulfilling her dream of becoming a teacher. But, this was not the situation in 2019 when Sarita’s parents were on the verge of discontinuing her studies after her 10th grade. Sarita’s father, Jyotish is affected by leprosy and was not in a position to financially support Sarita’s education. And given the fact, even today, Leprosy is still associated with the 6000-year-old myths and discrimination, it was difficult for him to maintain and earn a sustainable employment. Sarita’s dream seemed impossible to achieve back then, but it seems to be a near future reality today. This was made possible because we at LEPRA provide end-to-end solutions and support the patients in fighting Leprosy, Lymphatic Filariasis, HIV/ TB etc. and also ensure that their families have the necessary resources to continue building their future. Since the affected person and their families are usually not able to meet their basic daily needs, education is often not a priority as they do not have the means to sustain it and for children like Sarita, it is a distant dream.
LEPRA (www.leprasociety.in) has been in existence since 1989 and we are present in 10 states covering 141 districts of India. We work extensively at grass root levels in hard-to-reach remote places. Our range of services and interventions ensure that our beneficiaries and their families are able to access the same opportunities like everyone else – be it in the field of education or COVID19 vaccinations (where we facilitated COVID19 vaccinations to more than 13,000 beneficiaries in marginalised and vulnerable communities.)
And impacts like the above are made possible because of the support and generosity of our partners, donors and patrons like yourself.
The objective of this fundraiser is to ensure that with your support, we are able to continue supporting children like Sarita in their educational journeys and be a small part in their journeys which are both inspiring and difficult. And together, we can make their journeys a little bit better.
Support us to provide education support scholarship of INR 12,000/child for 300 more children belonging to the affected families of leprosy, lymphatic filariasis, HIV/AIDS etc. and other marginalised communities. Join us in becoming a part of their future.
